Project Overview

Travel Wise, TRansformation of AViation and rAilway soLutions toWards Integration and SynergiEs is a multimodal innovation project for the aviation and railway (and maritime) sectors, focusing on multimodal common situation awareness and increased coordination between air/rail/waterborne transport modes to facilitate multimodal journeys.

Travel Wise shifts traffic management from isolated modes to intermodal orchestration by developing a methodology, roadmap, and technologies for: i) information sharing across air, rail, maritime, and road operators, ii) collaborative decision-making in both normal and disrupted conditions, and iii) optimising the passenger experience.

It strengthens multimodal situation awareness and coordination, focusing on pre-tactical and tactical horizons. By monitoring traffic and passenger flows, it enables early detection and sharing of issues, minimising disruptions through collaboration. Building on SESAR’s work, it supports initial use cases via cross-modal data sharing.

Mission

To monitor traffic and passenger flows to strengthen multimodal coordination, proactively detect and share potential travel disruptions, and implement collaborative measures that minimize impact—supporting smarter decision-making and a smoother travel experience across air, rail, and waterborne transport modes.

Vision

To enable seamless and resilient multimodal travel by enhancing real-time coordination, anticipating disruptions, and fostering collaborative decision-making between air, rail, and other transport modes – ultimately improving passenger experience and journey continuity.

Concept & Methodology

Travel Wise combines research and real-world testing to improve air and rail coordination. It engages experts and users from the start, using design thinking to create practical, innovative solutions for seamless travel. A top-down approach analyzes best practices, while a bottom-up approach tests solutions in real conditions. Experts and stakeholders are involved from the start through focus groups, interviews, and demonstrations, ensuring practical, user-focused innovations.

The effectiveness of the Travel Wise solution relies on understanding the needs and expectations of its end users, as their feedback and involvement play a key role in shaping a solution that aligns with real-world requirements.

Understanding traveler needs through focus groups, interviews, and real-world observations and Identifying key challenges in air, rail, and maritime coordination.

Finding innovative solutions for seamless, efficient travel and developing testable solutions for air-rail data sharing, disruption management, and passenger assistance.

Running real-world demonstrations in Paris-Amsterdam, Athens, and Bologna to refine solutions. Rolling out optimized transport coordination based on test results and continuous improvements.
